  • Sammul Chan’s “Twelve Deadly Coins” to Be First Chinese TV Drama in 3D

After going through a lackluster career at TVB, Sammul Chan (陳鍵鋒) moved his career prospects to mainland China, and reached nationwide success with 2010’s Schemes of a Beauty <美人心计>. The Chinese dramas that followed, such as Yan Yu She Yang <烟雨斜阳> and The Golden Age of the Leftover Ladies <盛女的黄金时代> were also popular hits. After Sammul’s popularity in China skyrocketed in recent years, his fame may reach to even higher level with the upcoming 3D action epic, Twelve Deadly Coins <十二金钱镖>.
Directed by Hong Kong independent filmmaker, Patrick Yau (游達志), Twelve Deadly Coins is China’s first 3D television drama, and is currently actively filming in Wuxi, China. The Republican-era action drama is produced by Tianjin Jin Film and Television, and also stars Yuen Biao (元彪), Tao Xinran (陶昕然), and Xia Hua (夏花).
One of China’s most expensively-produced dramas to-date, a majority of the scenes in the drama will be filmed in 3D camera technology. With a total of thirty episodes, it is estimated that the production fee of Twelve Deadly Coins is even more expensive than a standard 3D film produced in Asia.
    Synopsis
A loose adaptation from the book of the same title by early twentieth century author, Gong Baiyu (宮白羽), Twelve Deadly Coins centers around the young male protagonist, Yang Hua, who disguises himself as a safeguard in Tianjin’s An Ping Safeguard Agency to kill the agency’s master Yu Jianping, the man who destroyed his family. His plan of vengeance is to gain Yu’s trust so the master will teach him the twelve ways of the “Golden Coin” technique.  Hua will then use the skill to kill him.
Hua’s plans almost go haywire when he meets the master’s daughter, Yu Yanqing. She is deeply in love with Hua, and he too begins to develop feelings for her. However, to complete his revenge, he puts his feelings aside and decides to use Yanqing as a tool to get closer to Yu. After going through a life-changing mission with Yu, Hua discovers that his family’s death was not as simple as he originally thought. Hua eventually becomes one of Yu’s most powerful and respected pupils, and later takes command of Yu’s agency after his death.
    Romance in the Great Era
Starring as Yang Hua is ex-TVB actor Sammul Chan. Prior to joining the An Ping Safeguard Agency, Hua was in love with Princess Wanqing, portrayed by 20-year-old newcomer, Xia Hua. It was love at first sight for Hua, and the princess also returns the same feelings for him. However, the vengeful Hua believes that avenging his family should be his utmost priority, and he cruelly cuts ties with the princess.
Action star Yuen Biao portrays the powerful “Golden Coin” master, Yu Jianping, and is Hua’s target. Yu’s daughter Yanping, portrayed by Legend of the Concubine Zhen Huan <后宫·甄嬛传> star, Tao Xinren, is deeply in love with Hua, and though Hua also begins to develop feelings for her, he cannot bring himself to fall in love with his enemy’s daughter. Hua pretends to be in love with Yanping, but is in fact using her as a way to gain Yu’s trust.
Yu’s senior apprentice Cheng Yue, portrayed by Ruan Weijing (阮伟旌), was considered by many to be Yu’s best pupil and future son-in-law, but with the appearance of Hua, this all changed overnight. When he sees Hua kissing Yanping one night, Yue decides to get rid of Hua and attempts to kill him. However, not only does Yue’s plan fail, his schemes also cause the entire agency to break down.

  • Karena Ng benefits from Teresa Mo's professionalism

    courtesy of on.cc

Karena Ng Chin Yu due to the film LOVE IS PYJAMAS (NAM YUN YU YI FOK) was linked to Chok King Raymond Lam! Fung in rumors, but she did not mind. Rumors were like fashion style, when they were outdated no one would notice. Actually not only the rumored boyfriend, Chin Yu also received attentive care from many co-stars. She said, "This is my third film. This time I have more emotional scenes, many of which are with the family. The group scenes are numerous and the pace fast. I learned a lot from Sister Mo (Teresa Mo Shun Kwan) and (Ronald) Cheng Chung Kei."

Chin Yu and Sister Mo played mother and daughter. She was grateful of her attentive guidance, from which she benefited a lot from. She said, "The most memorable was the scene in which I got Sister Mo mad. Although in real life I have argued with Ma, but this was truly the first time that it got so heated. I had to thank Sister Mo for guiding me with care. She truly is a very professional elder. Of course ten minutes before taking our marks she was already cultivating her emotions, which taught me such a great professional attitude."

Chin Yu said that Cheng Chung Kei often caused her bad take but she still was appreciative. "Cheng Chung Kei has a natural born sense of comedy. He and I in the film had a blurry relationship, as soon as I saw him I wanted to laugh. With his gestures, expressions and looks, he often caused my bad takes. However I learned the pace of making a comedy. Actually every movie was growth, I still have a lot that I can improve upon, hopefully I will gradually accumulate experience. After several comedies, next time I want to make an action film and play a killer with a gun. (You can easily be disfigured!) Injuries on the set are unexpected, I have to be careful to prevent them."

Raymond Lam and Michelle Ye to Work Together Again!

TVB’s “Golden Couple” of the early millennium, Raymond Lam (林峯) and Michelle Ye (葉璇), known as “RM” by their fans, will collaborate again in a new mainland Chinese period television drama, Legend of the Purple Hairpin <紫钗奇缘>. Set in the Tang dynasty, the drama is a loose adaptation of the popular traditional Cantonese opera, The Purple Hairpin <紫釵記>, which is in turn based on a Kunqu play written by Ming dynasty playwrite, Tang Xianzu (湯顯祖).
Legend of the Purple Hairpin tells the tragic love story of a Tang dynasty scholar Li Yi, who falls in love with the beautiful dancer, Huo Xiaoyan at first sight. The couple soon marry, and he gives her a purple hairpin as a token of their love. On their marriage night, Yi is forced to join the army and is forbidden to return home, leaving Xiaoyan to painfully wait for his return in the next few years. When Yi returns to Chang’an three years later, Yi believed that he and Xiaoyan would never be separate again. He was terribly mistaken.
The drama adaptation will incorporate elements of Tang dynasty high culture, including dance, music, and martial arts. Similar to the original opera, The Legend of the Purple Hairpin also includes themes of betrayal, lust, ambition, and deceit.
The Legend of the Purple Hairpin will be produced by Michelle Ye, and is slated to begin filming in Hengdian World Studios this October.
Raymond has expressed his excitement in working with Michelle again. He said, “We have not collaborated in ten years. I want to see if we still have the same sparks as before!”
    “RM” Couple Was Never Forgotten
Raymond Lam and Michelle Ye first collaborated on the set of 2002 TVB drama, Eternal Happiness <再生緣>, which was an adaptation of a short story by Qing dynasty female novelist, Chen Ruisheng (陳端生). Michelle portrayed the cross-dressing heroine, Mang Lai Kwan, who falls in love with the honest and kind Wongpo Siu Wah, portrayed by Raymond. The drama was also Raymond and Michelle’s first attempt at leading a drama.
Eternal Happiness was one of the highest-rated dramas of 2002, and was credited for being Michelle Ye and Raymond Lam’s most representative work at the time. Their chemistry in Eternal Happiness was highly praised and well-received by the public. They also jointly starred in 2002’s Golden Faith <流金歲月>, which premiered a few days after the finale of Eternal Happiness, but they did not share any scenes together.
Raymond and Michelle’s last collaboration was in 2003’s Lofty Waters, Verdant Bow <雲海玉弓緣>. Although the onscreen couple only collaborated as lovers in two dramas, their chemistry is unforgettable. “RM” had wowed audiences of the last generation, and fans hope that they will continue to impress in their new drama.

Koo Ming Wah: “I Am Not As Committed As Wayne Lai!”

Who ever said overnight sensations are not true? In just one night, Koo Ming Wah (古明華) became the biggest talk of the town. His role as the effeminate “So Gay” in the popular television drama, Divas in Distress <巴不得媽媽…> has become one of the year’s most popular characters, and 70,000 viewers are already pegging their votes to support the actor at this year’s TVB Anniversary Awards. Some are even beginning to call Koo as “the next Wayne Lai (黎耀祥).”
But is this really what Koo had in mind? To be the next Wayne Lai?
“I have a family to take care of,” replied Koo. “I think going back to dubbing cartoons is more practical.”
    Acting School
After graduating high school, Koo worked as a mechanic apprentice. Although the salary was low, he did not need to depend on his parents anymore, and had enough money to spend on himself and his family. A year later, his friend recommended him to join an acting school. There, he met Cheung Tat Ming (張達明). The two of them would spend hours performing on various stages, in venues that would house over a few hundred people. Koo said, “Standing on stage can become very exciting and relaxing. I realized acting was the right thing for me.”
Koo wanted to apply to The Hong Kong Academy of Performing Arts to further his acting career. When he told his parents that he wanted to return to school, they were shocked. Koo realized that the tuition would become a burden to his family, so he decided to give up on his education plans. The next morning, his mother called him from work, and said, “If you really want to do it, then do it. Life is very short. Mom will support you.”
Koo’s tuition at the Hong Kong Academy of Performing Arts was over $8,000 HKD per year, and Koo’s loans from the government exceeded $10,300 HKD. He finally graduated from the college in 1990, and paid out all of his loans and interests.
    Luck
Some of Koo’s more famous classmates included Sunny Chan (陳錦鴻), Rain Lau (劉玉翠), and Cheung Kam Ching (張錦程). Sunny immediately became a leading television actor after graduation. Rain Lau’s success was even more notable, winning both the Best Supporting Actress and the Best New Performer awards for her role in Queen of Temple Street <廟街皇后> at the Hong Kong Film Awards in 1991. Koo expected himself to gain similar success, and when he was nominated for the Best New Performer award for his role in the Category III film, Sex Racecourse <旺角馬場>, he thought he was a “sure win.”
“At that time, I felt undefeatable. A guy who filmed a Category III film can get nominated. Who can beat me?”
However, it was The Day of Being Dumb’s <阿飛與阿基> Anita Yuen (袁詠儀) who took home the Best New Performer award that year.
Koo sighed, “It turns out that even if you’re undefeatable, others can get even more undefeatable. Our society has too many people. No one is the best.”
Instead of fame and recognition, Koo’s Best New Performer nomination only brought him more filming deals for low-budget Category III films. Uninterested in the offers, Koo decided to join TVB and crash the television industry. After joining the station, Koo was given many opportunities to portray minor supporting characters for the station’s television dramas, but these offers began to slip away. A few years later, Koo’s characters stopped having names, and he merely became a background prop in the scenes.
“When I first joined TVB, I really wanted to put my diploma to use, and thought acting would really become my lifetime career. Even if I didn’t become as successful as my classmates, at least I could have others know that I love acting. But it turned out that no one really cared if I loved acting or not. My friends and family stopped following my dramas. I was beginning to feel even more discouraged. But what of it? This does not mean I should stop the cash flow! But whenever I see celebrities come to work late, not memorizing their scripts, yet still having the ability to scold at others, my will to continue this career grew weaker and weaker. They are celebrities. They can afford to have bad acting, but I am not, so all I could do was try my best at acting. I did not have good qualifications nor status. I did not even have the right to scold at anyone. So in the end, even my own acting got worse.”
However, Koo’s perseverance strengthened after collaborating with Felix Wong (黃日華) in 2010’s Gun Metal Grey <刑警>. “Felix has been acting for over 20 years, yet he still has that same fire and energy today. When I see him, I hated myself for even thinking about giving up.
“Luck. You cannot survive in this industry without luck.”
    Best Supporting Actor?
During the broadcast of Divas in Distress, over 70,000 viewers voted on a poll to support Koo to win Best Supporting Actor at this year’s TVB Anniversary Awards. Koo’s hopes in winning, however, are not high.
“Why would they give it to me? Do I even have market value?”
But what about Wayne Lai’s success story? Like Koo, he too was a late bloomer. Like Koo, Wayne too is not tall, handsome, nor young, yet he has become one of TVB’s staple lead actors. “I am not as committed as Wayne Lai. I have given up before, and I have questioned my abilities before. If I am able, other producers would notice me more, but so far, it’s only Poon Ka Tak (潘嘉德)!”
Poon Ka Tak is the producer of Divas in Distress. When casting for the role of  “So Gay,” Poon’s first choice was Koo. When Koo was about to give up acting to become a full-time voice actor, Poon encouraged Koo to portray the role, and Koo ultimately decided to push back his voice acting plans.
    Practicality
“I have a family. I need to live! We are not American actors. They can live off the rest of their life with the salary they earned from just one drama, but alas, I am a Hong Kong actor. This is not possible.”
Burdened by the low pay as a TVB actor, Koo decided to join the station’s voice acting team in 2000. Koo’s annual salary immediately tripled.
“The calculations are simple. As an actor, I work about 100 days per year. But as a voice actor, I work 300 days. How can I give this up?
“How many Wayne Lai’s are there in the world? I will not give up my voice acting work, unless the company decides to raise my salary. But is this even possible?”
Maybe Koo could handle two jobs as once? “Yes, I could. Maybe for a month. For two months. But there is a limit to my physicality. I still prefer acting over voice acting, but I need to be practical. I have a family. I need to live.”

The premiere featured an all male line up, only missing actresses AngelaBaby and Shu Qi. People thought that Shu Qi was dodging rumored boyfriend Fung Tak Lun.

Fung Tak Lun talked about the all male line up and admitted that it was a little dry. He said that Baby is working on a new film and has already taken time to promote in the Mainland; as for Shu Qi, he said that he definitely invited her but she had to work. Was he afraid that Shu Qi was avoiding him? He said, "Why would she need to?" Reporters said due to the rumors. He said, "Are rumors that have been around for over a decade still rumors?" As for whether he was afraid that with less actress the promotion would lose luster. He joked that for his next ovie he would choose to have two to three actresses. If one did not have time he still had the other one.

Earlier Shu Qi at the Milan fashion week described her relationship with Fung Tak Lun with three "very" good friend. Has their relationship elevated? He said, "I always thought we were very very very good fr! iends." Would he elevate it into a couple? He said why would they turn into a couple, the position of friend was decent too and did not need to change. How many "good" would he give Shu Qi? He said, "Same as always, I already said good friend." Was Shu Qi suitable to be his girlfriend? He said if he had to talk about Shu Qi, he might as well go back to talk about the movie. This subject has been talked about for many years and was very dull already. In addition, he said that because he was busying make TAI CHI he lost ten pounds. He admitted that he was very confident about the box office.

Leung Ka Fai two nights ago returned from Shanghai and a ribbon cutting event there. Leung Ka Fai's TAI CHI and COLD WAR (HONG JIN) were released at the same time. He said that he was not worried about competing against himself. He was not afraid that both films had Peng Yu-Yen and would be confusing. He also praised Peng Yu-Yen as very talented. A son like Peng Yu-Yen and a daughter like Baby truly were decent. Did he feel Baby was very hot? He said that he would only describe his own daughter as pretty, his own daughter was hot but he would not not call her hot. He said that he studied Tai Chi for two and a half months for this film. Now he is still learning, otherwise he would not be able to promote so much.

Wylie Chiu Shek Chi said that all four men were handsome. Who would she choose? He said, "I like Ng Yin Cho, but I have met Lisa S. before. Choosing someone else's husband doesn't seem right." Shek Chi said that she was single and hoped to be able to find a mixed heritage or foreigner for a boyfriend, because she thought it would be more fun.

  • Gaile Lok Denies “Seven Year Itch” in Marriage with Leon Lai

Gaile Lok (樂基兒) finally put a stop to her divorce rumors with Leon Lai (黎明), blasting tabloids for false speculations over her current marriage.
    Seven Year Itch?
Tabloids claimed that Gaile had entered the “Seven Year Itch,” falling for another man while giving Leon the cold shoulder. Gaile reportedly was not swayed by Leon’s lavish gifts, which included a new car, luxury yacht, and three houses in San Francisco. Despite the $100 million HKD gifts, Gaile allegedly treated Leon as if he were a stranger in the house.
With a 14-year gap from Leon, Gaile reportedly continued to frequent nightclubs after marriage. In April 2009, Gaile traveled overseas to a photography shoot. After getting drunk, she was photographed kissing a bearded man on the lips.
    Miscarriage Caused Rift?
Additional rumors surfaced that Gaile and Leon’s marriage rift was caused by her miscarriage. At the end of last year, Gaile appeared bloated and with a bulging belly, sparking pregnancy rumors. At the time, Leon had responded, “I will follow Chinese tradition and cannot respond until a full three months have passed!”
The couple never came to announce any pregnancy news; it was understood that Gaile had a miscarriage earlier this year.
    Gaile’s Response
“I will not respond to the details in the tabloid reports because they are false,” Gaile said at a promotional event on September 27.
Gaile denied that she had fallen for another man. However, she admitted that she had invested in a Mexican restaurant with ex-fiance, Ray Ng (吳承浚), which Leon was also aware of.
Asked to describe her current relationship with Leon, Gaile said, “I will not respond. I am here for work reasons today! In the industry for many years, these type of rumors frequently happen, but please do not harass other people. Even if Leon and I were able to accept the news, but please do not disturb other people who are unrelated to the story. I do not want to bother my family members.”

“The Bride With White Hair” Too Melodramatic for Viewers

Fans of television dramas that air on mainland China’s popular television station, Hunan TV, do not know whether to laugh or cry at the station’s current set list this season. Produced by first-time producer, Nicky Wu (吳奇隆), the 30-episode wuxia epic, The Bride With White Hair <新白发魔女传> airs six episodes a week during the prime time hours of Hunan TV, and stars Nicky Wu, Ma Su (马苏), Jenny Guo (郭珍霓), and Louis Fan (樊少皇). Although the drama has delivered ideal ratings thus far, it is heavily criticized by viewers, and has been receiving consistent backlash since its premiere on September 14.
Viewers first criticized the drama’s poor visual effects and underwhelming casting choices for the characters. Nicky Wu explained that the later episodes are still undergoing post-production, and the crew is rushing to turn in the tapes to Hunan TV. Several of the drama’s production crew voiced out their complaints on Weibo, exclaiming that it is near impossible to finish the post-production in time by the broadcast date.
    Plot is Too Dramatic
Aside from the drama’s technical complaints, the drama’s poorly written story line is also getting bashed. Viewers expressed that they do not know if they should laugh or cry at the drama’s overly dramatic plot. Some viewers even insisted that the drama’s scriptwriter is secretly Chiung Yao (瓊瑤), a famous Taiwanese novel writer known for her melodramatic plot lines, in disguise. A netizen sarcastically commented on an online discussion board, “When viewing the drama, please prepare your own tissues!”
On last weekend’s episodes, a major character was killed, and several of the main characters were psychologically tormented. Almost every major character in each episode would have an “epic long” crying scene, and many viewers unanimously exclaimed, “This isn’t a wuxia drama! It’s a tragic love story!”
Even Ma Su herself did not seem to think that the drama she was filming was a wuxia drama. While The Bride With White Hair was still in filming, Ma Su posted on her Weibo blog, “Are we really filming a wuxia drama? It seems more like a tragic drama. [I’m] crying everyday, and I almost have no more tears left to cry.” She then added that Nicky Wu should be responsible for giving her back her tears.
    Too Much Crying
The main female protagonist Lian Nichang, also known as the bride with white hair, is portrayed by Ma Su. The actress was previously slammed for being a poor casting choice for the role, and that she is not charismatic nor beautiful enough to do the role justice. The criticism, however, did not stop there. After last weekend’s episodes, the viewers concluded that not only was Ma Su’s Lian Nichang uncharismatic, she was also too weak.
Viewers claimed that Lian Nichang cries over every matter. She cried when her father died. She cried when Mu Jiuniang died. She cried some more when her master died. She even cried when her identity was exposed. In her tearful reunion with her lover Zhuo Yihang, she cried some more. No wonder the viewers suggested audiences to prepare tissues before viewing!
Loyal fans of The Bride With White Hair novel, literally translated to The Legend of the White-Haired Demoness, are unhappy with Ma Su’s portrayal. They claim that she makes the character appear too weak with her constant crying, and that her back story is too unrealistic and melodramatic, “This demoness is a bit too woeful! All of her closest friends are dying one by one! Who can endure that?” Other viewers remarked, “This is too depressing. I can’t take it anymore!” Some even said, “This is so bad, but I can’t stop watching it!”
Aside from Ma Su, Jenny Guo and the drama’s two male leads, Nicky Wu and Louis Fan, are also required to be expert criers. They cry when they discover the truth, cry when they get depressed, and cry when they get hurt. Viewers joked, “Men are also made from water, especially heroes of the Jianghu. When they cry, the whole world literally shatters! They definitely are not losers to the demoness.”
