The country singer took her own life at her Arkansas home earlier this month, 36 days after her partner David Wilson passed away in the same place, and Bob Forrest - who worked with the late star on 'Celebrity Rehab' in 2009 - was surprised by her actions.
He said: ''I never thought Mindy would take her own life. I always thought if she died it would be at the hands of another because of her past physically abusive relationships with men.
''Mindy had lost custody of her kids before and didn't kill herself then. I absolutely believe that David Wilson's suicide a month ago pushed her over the edge and caused her to take her own life. This was someone that Mindy had a history and a child with, and they seemed to be working through their issues. It's just so sad that she took her own life.''
Before shooting herself, Mindy - who had five-year-old son Zander with ex-boyfriend Billy McKnight, and 10-month-old Zayne with David - killed her pet dog and Bob believes the action demonstrated she wasn't in her ''right mind'' at the time of her death.
He told RadarOnline.com: ''It was rage and anger that caused her to do that.
''Mindy obviously wasn't in her right mind when she picked up the gun on that night. Speaking at a US press conference for 'Stoker', he said: ''It's funny working with someone who's been very famous for such a long time, and I don't want to sound like I'm sucking up to her, but she's very generous with her time.
''But we had a very nice day out with her where I got to know her as a mum - and some stars pay people to look after their children - but she's super hands-on and generous with her time.''
Matthew was impressed with how the 45-year-old redhead - who also has adopted children Isabella, 20, and 17-year-old Connor with her ex-husband Tom Cruise - handled attention from the public and thought it was admirable she politely refused to be photographed with her kids.
Addressing Nicole directly, he added: ''One doesn't know how to deal with it. You don't take photographs when you're out and about with your children in public and I love that about you.
''You've got to explain it to them [fans] and it's the nicest way of being let down if you have a longer conversation.''
Nicole, 45, insists she always makes room in her day-to-day schedule to spend time with her kids and tries to do as many things as she can with them one-on-one.
She said: ''I have many different aged daughters so there are different fun things to do with each other.''

Britney's colourist Brittany Hunter from Mark Slicker Salon told E! News: ''Britney has wanted a change for about a month, but we waited a while until we decided to go with it.
''Over the past month we both pulled out general pictures from magazines that we both like and then we collaborated on the colour. I wanted to keep her as close to her natural colour as possible, so not too dark. In the end we went with a very natural and rich light brown. We wanted the right tone that would complement her skin colour.''
Despite being notorious for her blonde locks since she first shot to fame at the age of 16, the singer - who recently quit her role on 'The X Factor' USA and split from fiancé Jason Trawick - was ''ready for a change'', according to Brittany.
The stylist said: ''We wanted to make sure she was going to be committed to it before we made the change as it can be a difficult process going from light blonde to brunette. We started the process on Thursday and then finished it up on Sunday.

The model and TV presenter is expecting her third child with soccer star husband Jamie O'Hara, and the new arrival will join sons Archie, two, and 19-month-old Harry.
She told Closer magazine: ''It's going to be our last baby, so I'd love a girl I can dress up rather than have to play football with.
''But, ultimately, all I wish for is a happy, healthy baby.''
Danielle is also hoping Katie Price - who announced her pregnancy with new husband Kieran Hayler over the weekend - has her baby at around the same time.
She added: ''I'd love us to have babies at the same time. At my wedding last year, Archie and Katie's daughter Princess Tiaamii [from a previous relationship] were bopping away on the dancefloor. They are best buds.''
Danielle, 29, also said her pregnancy came as complete shock, and she and Jamie conceived after getting ''a bit carried away'' on a night out in December celebrating her birthday.

The 51-year-old actor - who co-produced Best Picture Oscar-winning film 'Argo' - is jealous of the political drama's director Ben because of his rugged looks and enviable height.
Asked what he thought of Ben during the Academy Awards ceremony on 'Piers Morgan Tonight' on Sunday night (24.02.13), George joked: ''I really like him, except that he's tall and good looking.''
Reminded that fans cited George as the star they were most excited about seeing on the big night, the silver fox quipped: ''It was me. Until they saw me with the beard. They didn't like it. I noticed that.''
The star made Hollywood history by becoming the first person to be nominated in six different categories - Best Picture for 'Argo', Best Adapted Screenplay for 'The Ides of March', Best Director and Best Original Screenplay for 'Good Night, and Good Luck', Best Actor for 'Michael Clayton', 'Up in the Air' and 'The Descendents' and Best Supporting Actor for 'Syriana' - and George is proud to have managed to forge a career in other aspects of filmmaking that he can fall back on as he gets older.
He said: ''I am proud of it. I'm proud of it just because if you're going to survive in this business, you have to do other things. So the fact that I've been lucky enough to succeed in a bunch of different [categories] ... I am going to need fall-back jobs as I get older, so it's good to have them.''
