Chaos at the track! Daytona speedway becomes a disaster zone after racer's car breaches the fencing and injures fans
At least 30 fans were injured when a car sailed into the fence at Daytona International Speedway, and large chunks of debris - including a tyre - flew into the grandstands. The accident occurred as the field closed in on the finish line, and rookie Kyle Larson's car came upon the crash and went airborne into the fence that separates the track from the seats.Large chunks of Larson's car landed in the stands, and one of his tyres appeared to land midway up the lower section of the seating. The car itself had its entire front end sheared off, with the burning engine wedged through a gaping hole in the fence.Speedway president Joie Chitwood said 14 fans were treated on site, and 14 others were taken to hospitals.
Fireball: Kyle Larson and Regan Smith clash on the final lap of the NASCAR Nationwide Series at Daytona, Florida, sending fire and metal across the track and even through the fencingNo fatalities were reported, though initially one arrived in critical condition before being upgraded to 'stable'.The accident in the second-tier Nationwide series race happened the day before the Sprint Cup Series season-opening Daytona 500 - NASCAR's season-opening event.'First and foremost our thoughts and prayers are with our race fans,' Chitwood said. 'Following the incident we responded appropriately according to our safety protocols, and had emergency medical personnel at the incident immediately.'We're in the process of repairing the facility and will be ready to go racing tomorrow.'As emergency workers tended to injured fans and ambulance sirens wailed in the background, a somber Tony Stewart skipped the traditional post-race victory celebration.Stewart, who won for the 19th time at Daytona and seventh time in the last nine season-opening Nationwide races, was in no mood to celebrate.'The important thing is what going on on the fr! ontstretc! h right now,' said Stewart, the three-time NASCAR champion. 'We've always known, and since racing started, this is a dangerous sport. But it's hard. We assume that risk, but it's hard when the fans get caught up in it.'So as much as we want to celebrate right now and as much as this is a big deal to us, I'm more worried about the drivers and the fans that are in the stands right now because that was ... I could see it all in my mirror, and it didn't look good from where I was at.'
Aftermath: Safety staff attend to the injured fans who were sent into panic as the collision unfolded in front of them before some cars breached the fencing
Aftermath: Safety staff attend to the injure! d fans wh! o were sent into panic as the collision unfolded in front of them before some cars breached the fencingThe accident spread into the upper deck and emergency crews treated fans on both levels. There were five stretchers that appeared to be carrying fans out, and a helicopter flew overhead. A forklift was used to pluck Larson's engine out of the fence.'It's a violent wreck. Just seeing the carnage on the racetrack, it's truly unbelievable,' driver Justin Allgaier said.It was a chaotic finish to a race that was stopped for nearly 20 minutes five laps from the finish by a 13-car accident that sent driver Michael Annett to a hospital, where his Richard Petty Motorsports team said he would be held overnight with bruising to his chest. The race resumed with three laps to go, and the final accident occurred with Regan Smith leading as he headed out of the final turn to the checkered flag. He admittedly tried to block Brad Keselowski to preserve the win.'I tried to throw a block. It's Daytona, you want to go for the win here,' Smith said. 'I don't know how you can play it any different other than concede second place, and I wasn't willing to do that today. Our job is to put them in position to win, and it was, and it didn't work out.'As the cars began wrecking all around Smith and Keselowski, Stewart slid through for the win, but Larson plowed into Keselowski and his car was sent airborne into the stands.'I hope all the fans are OK and all the drivers are all right,' Larson said. 'I took a couple big hits there and saw my engine was gone. Just hope everybody's all right.'He said he was along for the ride in the last-lap accident.
Assistance: Medical officials remove an injured fan from the stands following the incident'I was getting pushed from behind, I felt like, and by the time my spotter said lift or go low, it was too late,' Larson said. 'I was in the wreck and then felt like it was slowing down and I looked like I could see the ground. Had some flames come in the cockpit, but luckily I was all right and could get out of the car quick.'It appeared fans were lined right along the fence when Larson's car sailed up and into it, but Chitwood indicated there was a buffer. He said there would be no changes to the seating before the Daytona 500.'We don't anticipate moving any of our fans,' Chitwood said. 'We had our safety protocols in place. Our security maintained a buffer that separates the fans from the fencing area. With the fencing being prepared tonight to our safety protocols, we expect to go racing tomorrow with no changes.'Larson's car appeared to hit where the cross-over gate - a section that can be opened for people to travel back and forth from the infield to the grandstands - is located in the fence.Previous accidents in which drivers hit crossover gates were severe, but the gates were in the wall and not the fence for Mike Harmon's accident at Bristol in 2002 and Michael Waltrip's at the same track in 1990.Still, NASCAR senior vice president Steve O'Donnell said it would be studied.'We look at this after every incident,' O'Donnell said. 'We've learned in the past certain protocols put in place today are a result of prior incidents. Again, our initial evaluation is still ongoin! g. But it! 's certainly something we'll look at. If we can improve upon it, we'll certainly put that in play as soon as we can.'Larson had been scheduled to race his sprint car later Saturday in Ocala, Florida, and even seemed restless to get there during the late stages of the Nationwide race. He pulled out of the event following the accident.'Honestly, the race itself pales in comparison to the injuries sustained by the fans,' said Chip Ganassi, the team owner who has Larson in his driver development program.'Our thoughts and prayers go out to all the fans that were injured as a result of the crash. As for Kyle, I am very happy that he is OK.'VIDEO: Watch the shocking crash from Saturday's NASCAR race in Daytona
Keselowski watched a replay of the final accident, and said his first thoughts were with the fans. As for the accident, he agreed he tried to make a winning move and Smith tried to block.'He felt like that's what he had to do, and that's his right. The chaos comes with it,' Keselowski said. 'I made the move and he blocked it, and the two of us got together and started the chain events that caused that wreck. First and foremost, just want to make sure everyone in the stands is OK and we're thinking about them.'Keselowski said the incident could cast a pall on the ! Daytona 5! 00.'Until we know exactly the statuses of everyone involved, it's hard to lock yourself into the 500,' Keselowski said. 'Hopefully, we'll know soon and hopefully everyone's OK. And if that's the case, we'll staring focusing on Sunday.'

Best Supporting Actress Oscar winner Anne Hathaway believes she is still an ''underdog'' in Hollywood and will never stop worrying about being unemployed.
Despite picking up the Best Supporting Actress gong at the 85th annual Academy Awards last night (24.02.13), the 30-year-old star insists she hasn't lost touch with reality and still feels like a struggling actress, constantly worrying about her next job.
Asked backstage at the Dolby Digital Theater in Los Angeles whether she was going to stop describing herself as the ''underdog'', she said: ''Officially, never! I'm an actor, man. I mean, this is spectacular, but if you want to get realistic with it and thank you very much for bringing me back down to earth. You're always looking for the next job.
''You always think at the end of one, 'It doesn't matter what's happened before, no one's going to hire me again.' So, I do feel this evening the respect of my peers, and I am going to ride that wave for as long as I can, but I do also have a practical approach to acting, which is got to work, got to work, got to work.''
The svelte star, who cut off her long hair and lost 25 pounds in three weeks for her role as prostitute Fantine in Tom Hooper's big screen version of 'Les Miserables', also revealed she is very critical of her acclaimed rendition of 'I Dreamed A Dream' and can only hear the flat notes when she watches it back.
Anne admitted: ''I'm impressed by the work around me. I'm impressed by my make-up. I'm impressed by my costume.
''I'm impressed by the haircut and the set and the score and the song, but no, all I can hear is all of the notes that I didn't quite hit. But maybe I'll get over it someday.''
The actress, who also won in the same category at the BAFTAs, Golden Globes and Screen Actors Guild Awards, performed songs from the musical live at the ceremony alongside the rest of the cast including Hugh Jackman and Amanda Seyfried. - Richard Gere: Buddhism is my life Richard Gere says his Buddhist faith is at the centre of everything he does and every decision he makes in his life.
Richard Gere says his Buddhist faith is at the centre of everything he does and every decision he makes in his life.
The Hollywood actor is a firm believer in the Asian religion, which focuses on personal spiritual development, and says it is the guiding force that surrounds everything he does.
He explained: ''It's relevant to everything I do. Buddhism is the camel of my life. It's there everywhere. I don't think you have to be Buddhist to get it, quite honestly. I'm more interested in secular ethics, about what we all have in common. What is good? What is happiness? What is our duty to ourselves?''
The 'Arbitrage' star is happily married to former model Carey Lowell - with whom he has a 12-year-old son, Homer - but, at 63, he still doesn't think he has reached sexual maturity.
Gere still has strong erotic urges and he channels of all this energy into his marriage to Carey, 52, but he tries to control it because Buddhism teaches that desire causes suffering.
In an interview with The Guardian newspaper, he said: ''I haven't quite got there myself. You don't want to lose that energy but there's an unseemliness at a certain age when you're run by it, when you're not in control, that's really kind of foul.
''That's what we have to look at. How can I use desire in such a way that I might be proud of it at the end of my life? There is a way but you have to work at it. At some future date I will be there.'' - Pink to replace Britney Spears on The X Factor? 'The X Factor' USA could be swapping one pop superstar for another as 'Try' singer Pink is reportedly in line to replace Britney Spears on the show's judging panel.
'The X Factor' USA could be swapping one pop superstar for another as 'Try' singer Pink is reportedly in line to replace Britney Spears on the show's judging panel.
The 'Try' singer is being considered for a role on the show's judging panel - sitting alongside Simon Cowell - following the departure of the 'Hold It Against Me' hitmaker after just one season last year, reports the Daily Star newspaper.
Joining the panel would be a major U-turn from the 33-year-old singer's previous comments, claiming she'd turned down offers from all of the major reality singing competitions including 'The X Factor', 'American Idol' and 'The Voice'.
The 'So What' hitmaker admitted she would be worried about being hated by viewers for her brutal honesty and feels Simon, 53, is the only reality TV judge who is able to be scathing and get away with it.
She said: ''I was offered 'The Voice' in Australia plus 'American Idol' and 'The X Factor'. I said no because you can't be honest. People will hate you if you're honest. Simon Cowell is the only person who gets away with it because he's got an accent. And he's a man.
''People would just hate me more than they already do. I don't want to hurt anybody's feelings. Besides, you can sing karaoke anywhere.''
As well as Britney, Simon - who acts as executive producer and head judge on the show - is looking for a replacement for music executive L.A. Reid, who also left the series at the end of the second season.
'Skyscraper' singer Demi Lovato is expected to return to the judging panel with Simon, while host Mario Lopez is also rumoured to be returning. Meanwhile, Mario's co-host Khloe Kardashian Odom has reportedly been axed. - Stars defend Oscars host Seth MacFarlane Russell Crowe, Kristin Chenoweth, Steve Martin and Rainn Wilson are among the stars who have praised Seth MacFarlane's Oscars hosting stint in the wake of cirticism over his controversial jokes.
Russell Crowe, Kristin Chenoweth, Steve Martin and Rainn Wilson are among the stars who have praised Seth MacFarlane's Oscars hosting stint in the wake of cirticism over his controversial jokes.
The 'Family Guy' creator has come under fire for some of his more daring jokes at the Academy Awards on Sunday night (24.02.13) but the 'Les Miserables' star and comic actor Steve - who has hosted the ceremony three times, in 2001, 2003, and 2010 - think he did a great job.
Russell tweeted: ''Congratulations @SethMacFarlane , you did great mate, handled it all with grace, #topjob (sic)''
Steve added: ''Seth MacFarlane was wonderful and who knew? I did. But then, I wrote ''Cruel Shoes''.''
'The Office' actor Rainn Wilson was also a fan of the 39-year-old star's presenting style, as were Kristin Chenoweth - who performed a musical number, 'Here's to the Losers', to close last night's show at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles with Seth - and funnyman Seth Green.
Rainn wrote: ''Truly, @SethMacFarlane did a great job. Funny, self-deprecating and surprisingly fresh. (sic)''
Kristin tweeted: ''I had a blast tonight singing with @sethmacfarlane. He KILLED it! So good! (sic)''
And Seth added: ''Congrats on a great Oscars @SethMacFarlane Thanks for making that so fun #NewClassic (sic).''
The 'Ted' director has been slammed for his controversial jokes, which saw him mock the newly-reconciled relationship between Chris Brown and Rihanna, who originally split in February 2009 after he assaulted her.
Speaking about 'Django Unchained', Seth said: ''This is the story of a man fighting to get back his woman, who's been subjected to unthinkable violence. Or as Chris Brown and Rihanna call it, a date movie.''
Drawing on the film's foul and racist language for another gag, he said: ''I'm told that the screenplay was loosely based on Mel Gibson's voicemails.''
A reference to the actor's taped abusive calls to former girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva.
Additionally, he poked fun at Ben Affleck, whose admission from the Best Director shortlist had caused surprise ahead of the ceremony.
Speaking about his film 'Argo', he said: ''The film's director is unknown to the Academy.''
And Seth also joked about 52-year-old George Clooney's preference for younger women.
Discussing nine-year-old Best Actress nominee Quvenzhané Wallis, he said: To give you an idea of how young she is, it'll be 16 years until she's too old for Clooney.'' - Naomi Watts at the Vantiy Fair Oscar Party

Snooki must have blown through a lot of her Jersey Shore and book money, because she has sold her Cadillac Escalade on eBay. According to reports, she sold the vehicle for a whopping $77,000 and it received over 80 bids.
The auction for the pink-trimmed Cadillac Escalade ended with a winning bid of $77,510. From the description of the auction: "This 2011 Cadillac Escalade is currently owned by Nicole Snooki Polizzi. It
is the actual car that she has driven in many off her television appearances."
Apparently she also autographed the hood of the vehicle, so all of the buyer's friends and family members will know that he or she was stupid enough to cough up $77,000 for a car owned by this twatwaffle.
The description added, "This is not a vehicle that you can buy everyday. It is an opportunity to own a piece of pop culture history!"

Octomom Nadya Suleman is a pot smoker. Who knew?!? We're guessing that she would need something to get through the day after dealing with 14 kids…but in truth, it is a situation that she knowingly created for herself.
Apparently, Nadya has a prescription for the ganja, so it's all good if she wants to toke it up when dealing with the kids. TMZ reports:
In a voicemail obtained by TMZ, Nadya Suleman explains how she told officials from the L.A. Dept. of Children and Family Services about her habit of indulging in a pot cookie every now and then.
Good for her for toking it if she needs it. She's got the card, so obviously her children are in no danger of being taken away. We can't speak on her parenting skills, though.
Suleman says, "I told them the truth. I got my medical marijuana card, I don't smoke 'cause it's disgusting, disgusting and I could say in the past I have tried it, it's sick."
"But once in a while in the past I have had a cookie … and they said, 'Well you have your card …'"

According to TMZ, Lindsay wasn't in custody, so it wasn't necessary for her to have her Miranda rights read. Further, the cops were able to question Lindsay without reading her her rights. The problem with the case is that Lindsay lied to the police when asked if she was driving the Porsche at the time of the accident.
So basically, he is trying to do anything and everything to get her out of trouble. Does she stand any chance of walking on the three misdemeanors of which she's being charged? Or is she destined to do jail time AGAIN?

Katie Price isn't bothered if she has a baby boy or and girl and says her only concern is that her child is born healthy.
The 34-year-old glamour model is expecting her fourth child with her new husband Kieran Hayler - who she wed after a whirlwind two-month romance - and insists she isn't concerned whether she has a boy or a girl, only that the child is born healthy.
Asked whether she'd prefer a boy or a girl, she told the Daily Mirror newspaper: ''I just want a healthy baby. I feel so lucky and am in a really good place.
''We are thrilled. It's early days and I am nervous but Kieran has been taking great care of me.''
Katie's worry stems from looking after her 10-year-old son Harvey, who has multiple disabilities including autism and blindness. The busty brunette also has children Junior, seven, and Princess Tiaamii, five, with her ex-husband Peter Andre.
The sexy star added she has had to rethink her usually risque outfit choices to hide her growing baby bump and joked she has never before worn such loose-fitting clothes.
She said: ''I've started to show and did a photo-shoot where it was so hard hiding it - I've never worn so many baggy jumpers.''
