The 49th Golden Horse Awards, one of the most prestigious award ceremonies in the Chinese film industry, was held on Saturday, November 24, in Yilan, Taiwan.

Mega stars from Taiwan, Hong Kong and China graced the red carpet event, with Andy Lau, chairman of the Golden Horse Awards judging committee this year, attracting the most attention with his timeless charm.

Taiwanese top model Lin Chi-ling stole the limelight with her revealing outfit, while Kai Ko of You Are The Apple of My Eye fame, raised the temperatures at the event with his youthful presence.

Hong Kong veteran actor Lau Ching-wan bagged the Best Leading Actor award with his performance in Life Without Principle, while Gwei Lun-mei's brilliant acting in Gf*Bf won her the Best Leading Actress title, the first Taiwanese actress to do so in six years. It is also her first Golden Horse trophy.

Though competition was fierce, as actors and actresses from different countries vied for the top awards, both winners were hot favourites before the award ceremony.

Lau Ching-wan, who has been in the industry for more than 20 years, is undoubtedly one of the most experienced and skilful actors around. The 48-year-old announced that his wife is his 'lucky charm' at the red carpet and indeed, he finally brought home the Golden Horse trophy this year, after missing it several times during previous ceremonies. The Best Actor was awarded with a kiss from his wife after he won.

"I never thought I would win the award! I'm so lucky," he rejoiced.

Similarly, Gwei Lun-mei, 28, was clearly surprised by her win and choked on her tears while giving her acceptance speech. She said, "I really like acting in movies, and I will continue to do so." The star also shyly expressed her thanks to her boyfriend, Taiwanese director Leon Dai.

Though Johnnie To did not turn up to receive the Best Director award personally, his work in Life Without Principle was judged to be exemplary and 'near perfection'. The Best Picture award went ! to Chinese film Beijing Blues while Huang Yu-siang (Touch of the Light) was honoured as Outstanding Taiwanese Filmmaker of the Year.

After the event, Andy Lau teased, "Friends who won, thank the Golden Horse Awards. Those who did not, come and find me [to get your awards]." He added that the Golden Horse experience had been especially fulfilling for him.
