Veronica Yip’s family assets worth HK$8 billion
It is believed that the retired actress will be making her silver screen comeback 'for fun'
Hong Kong movie star Veronica Yip has agreed to return to the big screen after 16 years, via an upcoming Lunar New Year film, I love Hong Kong 2013.
The 45-year-old started her entertainment career when she won the 2nd runner-up prize in the 1985 Miss Asia Pageant. She married wealthy Chinese-American businessman Jeffrey Wu in 1996, before announcing her retirement from showbiz. Veronica has since moved overseas with her husband while assisting him in his business management.
Despite the global economic slump, their business expanded from the supermarket chain and food distribution sectors to the banking, aviation and real estate industries in less than 20 years.
The business' net worth increased in multifold as a result, and with their family assets amounted to approximately HK$ 8 billion (S$ 1.2 billion) in total, most believe that her impending showbiz comeback would purely be 'for fun'.
"It [our net worth] is enough to last a few lifetimes," the former actress once revealed.
But when she was asked on the exact figures, she declined to elaborate and said, "Our goal has always been to own a 100 buildings and now that we have 50, we're halfway there."
The billionaire also expressed her philanthropic wish, "We can't bring the money with us when we die, so why not use it to help ourselves? The returns are greater."
