Murray falls at the final hurdle in Melbourne after classy Djokovic proves too strong for world No 3
By MIKE DICKSON- Andy Murray broke Novak Djokovic physically at the US Open final and the world No 1 returned the favour to retain his Australian Open title.
The comeback that the 25 year-old Serb was denied at Flushing Meadows in September proved easier to pull off against his contemporary, who failed to drive home the early advantage and went down 6-7 (2-7), 7-6 (7-3), 6-3, 6-3 in a gruelling three hours and 40 minutes. The four hours it had taken to suppress Roger Federer in the semi-finals weighed heavily on Murray as the match went on as he received treatment for a blistered toe and appeared to be struggling with his hamstring as well.
Sealed with a kiss: Novak Djokovic poses for the cameras with his trophy
Champagne Charlie: Djokovic celebrates in style in Melbourne
Job done: Djokovic holds up the Australian Open trophy
Bridge too far: Andy Murray was unable to win back to back grand slam titles
Game, set and match: Djokovic let his emotions show after he finally retained the Australian OpenSo he becomes the latest man to fail to back up his debut Grand Slam by winning his next one, although this is very much the domain of Djokovic, the place where he has been unbeaten since 2010.Murray will curse his inability to put away the second set, in which he appeared to have the upper hand, with his opponent only just holding for the tiebreak, which he took 7-3, helped by a double fault bizarrely caused by a dropping feather as he served. That was a decisive passage of play, although a key game was the second one of the second set, when Murray had three break points at 0-40 and failed to put away a relatively straightforward mid court backhand of the kind that he usually devours.
Resilience: Djokovic dives to return an incredible forehand
Stretched: Murray was unable to cope with Djokovic's pace in the endSuch slip-ups, at a time when Djokovic was at odds with himself showing real signs of frustration, are the difference when the best players meet each other and are as closely matched as these two.Djokovic, whose serve was not broken all match despite Murray being such an outstanding returner, got the first break for 5-3 in the third and never looked back as Murray visibly tired. There were very few opportunities offered to the receiver in the first two sets.Djokovic had the better chances in the first with five break points split between the sixth and eighth games only for Murray to serve his way out of danger. The world No 1's frustration at failing to convert, coupled with irritation with his footwear, boiled over in the tie-break as his game capitulated. It was Murray who was the aggressor in the second as he looked to double his advantage. He had three chances to leap into a 2-0 lead but Djokovic changed tack, charging the net to escape immediate danger. It remained on serve until another breaker which was tight until Murray threw in just his third double fault of the tournament at 2-2.
Serving up: Djokovic showed his stamina and technique during an epic final
Ouch: M! urray showed some sore-looking blisters
Realisation: Kim Sears held her head in her hands upon seeing her boyfriend begin to lose control of the matchHe put his first serve into the net and was shaping up to deliver the second when he noticed a feather dropping on to the court out of the corner of his eye.Having removed it, he promptly put the second serve long. It was all Djokovic needed to level the match and the momentum appeared to swing further in his favour when Murray had to call a medical time-out for blisters at the change of ends with television pictures showing the extent of the damage to his right foot. There was no immediate change in his movement although there was the definite sense the match as now Djokovic's for the taking. And the top seed needed no second invitation as he set up three break points for a 5-3 lead.
Good start: Murray kept pace with Djokovic and took the first set on a tie-break
Full house: The Rod Laver Arena was packed out in MelbourneTwo poor forehands saw the first two come and go but Murray could not escape a third as Djokovic claimed the first break of the match before servi! ng it out! .Murray was clearly upset at umpire John Blom for not doing more to quieten the crowd and in particular one heckler who had forced him to halt his service action twice at important points of the third set.Yet he started the fourth on the front foot, setting up his first break point chance since the second game of the second set only for Djokovic to close the door with a booming serve out wide.Crumbling hopes: Murray began to fall behind as Djokovic grew stronger
Relentless: Djokovic put in an immaculate display of ground strokesBy now, Murray was also clutching his left hamstring and it was no surprise that Djokovic broke again for 2-1, winning a long rally at 30-40 after a tired-looking Murray jammed a backhand into the net.The match was slipping away from Murray and he dropped his serve once more on a double fault as Djokovic established a 4-1 lead.
Merciless: Both Djokovic and Andy Murray gave their all
Frustration: Murray takes a break between games during the finalThe effort was certainly there as the world No 3 continued to chase down every ball despite being in obvious discomfort but there was no let-up from Djokovic as he completed his 21st consecutive win in Melbourne and gained revenge for his defeat to Murray in the US Open final last September.Murray was humble in defeat, and said: 'I want to congratulate Novak, his record here is incredible and he's the deserved champion.'Djokovic also credited his adversary, and said: 'It was bad luck for Andy I'm sure we'll have many more great matches in future. It's an incredible feeling to win here again. It's my most successful Grand slam and I love this court.'
No 1 fan: Actor Kevin Spacey was in the audience
Entourage: Sears was joined by Murray's coach Ivan Lendl and his mother Judy

She was joined by her adorable daughters Ava, five; and Hero, two.
Myleene escaped to the Caribbean for Christmas and New Year, staring off in Jamaica before moving on to Antigua.

She was clearly looking forward to starting 2013 with a clean slate after a difficult 2012.
Myleene and estranged husband Graham Quinn split in April last year just six month after marrying.
The couple had been together for 11 years before their low-key wedding in front of 16 guests.

She was clearly happy to put the difficult year behind her as she tweeted: 'Goodbye 2012. You were a bit s**t.' on New Year's Eve.
Meanwhile, last week Myleene was one of the few stars to defend Beyonce after the latter was accused of lip-synching during US President Barack Obama's inauguration performance.
She tweeted: 'I don't get what's outrageous about lipsyncing to your OWN vocals? Not exactly Milli Vanilli. #beyonce.'

So, I wanted to take a moment to talk about Aimee Teegarden.

You guys probably know her from Friday Night Lights…

… but she was also the lead in Disney's Prom.

And as we've previously discussed, Prom was intended as a way to showcase new talent including Danielle Campbell, Nicholas Braun, and Raini Rodriguez.

So anyway, I finally saw the movie, and I was very impressed.

…In case you guys couldn't tell, she's 23, so you're safe to look,

Oh, and this particular set is from the Sugar Factory in Las Vegas last year.

As always, you can see all the full size pictures in the gallery; just click any pic above.

PUBLISHED: 20:18, 26 January 2013 | UPDATED: 20:20, 26 January 2013
- She's created quite the Splash! quite literally since starring in Tom Daley's televised diving competition thanks to her picture perfect bikini body.
And now 51-year-old Linda Barker has opened up to thank her fans for their kind words over her physique.
Wowing the crowds once more on Saturday night's semi-final, Linda again showed off her toned abs and slimline figure on the show.
Defying her age: TV presenter Linda barker admits she's flattered by the response over her toned body as she takes to the water in Tom Daley's Splash! once again
And after host Gabby Logan complimented her on her body at the age of 51 and pointed out the stir it had caused, Linda smiled and responded: 'I am so flattered, thank you so much.'
But she wasn't the only one to make an impact on Saturday night's show - Olympic boxer Anthony Ogogo announced he had to pull out of the competition ahead of the semi-final after injuring himself.
The 24-year-old announced the news live on Saturday night's episode of the show, admitting he was 'gutted' to not be able to continue.
Flattered: She told Gabby Logan she was stunned by the reaction, as she showed off her toned abs in a red bikini on Saturday's semi-final
TV presenter Gabby Logan announced to the audience that he'd not trained for this week's competition, before taking the mic over to him.
After revealing he had hurt himself in last week's show after an old injury in his achilles' heel has returned thanks to him landing in the water awkwardly.
He told his fans while looking downhearted: 'I'm gutted I just want to thank everybody. I really want to win but I've got to look after my career.
'I've been in a lot of pain all week. I want to become a world champion one day, I've got a long career ahead of me.
'I feel like I've let the production team down and the fans down, you know.'
But he ensured he made amends by giving the audience in the arena and at home one last flash of his toned abs as he danced around poolside in his trunks.
He decided to reveal his latest specially designed one piece as he took off his bright green dressing gown.
Sad news: Olympic boxer Anthony Ogogo announces live on Tom Daley's Splash! show that he's had to pull out of the remainder of the competition after injuring himself
Show off: He said he felt he'd let his fans down... but made amends by giving one last flash of his trunks
Hospital room: The 24-year-old Olympian revealed he had to put his sporting career first and therefore decided to not risk further injuring himself
Clearly enjoying the attention and adamant on having one last moment in his trunks for the nation, Anthony happily flung his hands in the air and shook himself around while revealing all.
It's a shame for the star, who wowed during his performance on last week's show, which won him a place on this week's final.
He took home a bronze medal during the London 2012 Olympics after competing as a tough boxer.
But Ogogo, 24, looked less fearsome while competing in the Tom Daley diving show Splash! seven days ago.
The sportsman wore a pair of tiny swimming trunks which left little to the imagination once again.
Before he took to the diving board, Anthony wore a bright yellow dressing gown with a glittering gold trim while he sat by the pool.
Out of the competition: Anthony revealed his decision live on Saturday night's show as he spoke to hos! t Gabby L! ogan
No more: He spoke to Gabby in his green dressing gown before pleasing his fans by showing off his body once again
But when it came to his dive, he stripped off to reveal his swimwear which consisted of a tiny piece of tight gold material with red stripes.
He tweeted: 'My oh my. The trunks I'm being forced to wear are small. Please eat well in advance, I don't want to be accountable for any regurgitation.'
And while Anthony seemed shy before the programme, viewers were delighted to see so much of the sporting hunk as he donned the trunks which were almost similar to the famously revealing gold hot pants of Kylie Minogue.
One tweeted: 'Anthony Ogogo in trunks is the ONLY reason anyone watched Splash tonight.'
Another added: 'Anthony Ogogo's trunks are by far the best thing about splash ;) #hotathletebod. (sic)'
And one other Twitter user called for the boxer to empty his wardrobes and wear nothing but the trunks in future.
They wrote: 'Yes @AnthonyOgogo. Just, yes. Forget the diving. Just wear the trunks AT ALL TIMES! X (sic)'
Ready to go: Anthony's mind was taken off his seemingly uncomfortable trunks during as he prepared to! dive but! he adjusted his manhood after he emerged from the pool
And he's off: Anthony falls back from the diving board as he performs his stunt for the competition
Anthony's skimpy outfit may have impressed his fans but the sporting star attempted to hide his manhood and adjusted his privates while listening to the judges comments after the dive.
The former Olympian was voted through to the next round of the show and will have to dive again in a bid to win the series.
Thanking viewers after the show, he tweeted: 'Hey everyone. Thanks for the support tonight. I dont know whether to thank people for voting or not as now I have to do it all over again.
'But tonight was great fun. The trunks were a bit suspect but all in all I had a load of fun. What a long week. I need my bed. Night troops!'
Fighting fit: The boxer put up his fists as he rose to the surface of the water following his dive
Keeping her eyes up: Gabby Logan avoided looking at Anthony's tiny trunks as she chatted to him before his dive
