For its part, Madagascar 3 took in 49 million yuan (6.2 million euros) for 162 million yuan (20.5 million euros) from its first 17 days in cinemas but the real surprise for the week was the strong showing on debut by the Taiwan-China co-production Black & White: Episode One.

The Tsai Yueh-hsun-directed thriller picked up 48 million yuan (six million euros) on debut to break Hollywood's stranglehold on Chinese cinemas and to relegate Men in Black 3 into fourth spot.

The Will Smith smash still managed 31 million yuan (four million euros) and now has an impressive 508 million yuan (64.3 million euros) in its coffers after 31 days of screening.
