Hollywood’s investment in Chinese cinema gathered pace today as Chinese production company National Film Capital (NFC) announces ten American-Chinese co-productions worth $300m.

A script written by Bruce Lee will be one of ten films made between the US and China

The state-controlled entertainment group are focusing on projects with international appeal, most notably Spiderman-creator Stan Lee’s Ming: The Annihilator.

It is hoped Chinese stories will be adapted with a commercial mindset, before being directed by filmmakers with Hollywood experience.

Also known as China Mainstream, the Beverly Hills-based unit China Mainstream Media National Film Capital will raise capital from Chinese local governments and private equity investors in China and Hong Kong before producing and distributing English-language pictures with major Hollywood studios and independent moviemakers.

President of China Mainstream Liu Yuan said: “The Chinese film industry needs Hollywood expertise and Hollywood needs the Chinese market. We are the perfect one-stop China turn-key partner for Hollywood.”

At a press event at the Shanghai International Film Festival, NFC announced $200m will be invested in co-productions, while the remaining $100m will be invested in cinema development and film marketing.

The Bourne Legacy screenwriter Dan Gilroy is scripting $100m Chinese superhero project Ming: The Annihilator for Stan Lee’s Magic Storm Entertainment.

NFC will also fund $80m 3D action fantasy The Dragon’s Scroll, based on comic series Way Of The Rat, produced by Shimon Arama and directed by Charlie Gibson.

Other films include The Silent Flute, the last script written by late action star Bruce Lee; Genghis Khan, about the Mongolian warrior written, to be produced by Peter Doyle; English-language fantasy Shrinking, to be directed by Ken Bates; and historical adventure 1421, about 15th century Chinese admiral Zheng He.
