Uggie has his day at Grauman's Chinese Theatre - San Francisco Gate

Every dog has its day - and Monday belonged to Uggie.

The canine star of the Oscar-winning film "The Artist" became the first dog to put its paw prints in concrete outside the famous Grauman's Chinese Theatre in Hollywood.

The rambunctious Jack Russell terrier was celebrated at a treat-laden ceremony outside the landmark as Councilman Tom LaBonge declared it Uggie Day in Los Angeles.

"The main message that Uggie would like to send to everybody out there is to please adopt," Uggie's trainer,Omar Van Muller, told the crowd. "He's adopted. He made it. If you guys can adopt a dog, even if they don't make it on the big screen, they'll be big stars at your house."

The event also marked Uggie's retirement from show business. Van Muller said Uggie, whose other film credits include "Mr. Fix It" and "Water for Elephants," will no longer star in films but will appear at charity events and other functions.

Uggie, who arrived at Grauman's in a fire truck, was bestowed with a golden bow-tie collar and given a cake in the shape of a fire hydrant after performing tricks for photographers and tourists lining a red carpet.

He was later joined by pooch pals Lassie and Rin Tin Tin and "Artist" actor Ken Davitian.

A pair of Uggie's "Artist" co-stars - his brother Dash and another Jack Russell named Dude - were noticeably absent Monday. The three shared the role of the canine companion to Jean Dujardin's fading silent-film star in "The Artist." The movie won five trophies at the Academy Awards this year, including the best picture prize.

Uggie was nearly upstaged at his own event when pop star Katy Perry unexpectedly appeared across the street, attracting a crowd of police and barking fans. Perry was scheduled to appear on "Jimmy Kimmel Live," which is filmed at the nearby El Capitan Theatre.

After cementing his paws, Uggie dipped them in ink and "autographed" DVD and Blu-ray copies of "The Artist." The pooch was visibly shaken during much of the event, probably because of a combination of the large crowd and the oppressive summer heat. After the almost hour-long event, Uggie and company retreated inside the theater.

While Uggie is the first canine to be showcased at Grauman's courtyard, three dogs - Lassie, Rin Tin Tin and 1920s star Strongheart - have stars on the nearby Hollywood Walk of Fame, along with fictional critters Godzilla, Kermit the Frog, Big Bird and the Muppets.

Swank promotes dog power

Thousands of Romanian street dogs have found a friend in Oscar-winning actress Hilary Swank.

Swank, who has won best actress for "Boys Don't Cry" and "Million Dollar Baby," visited Bucharest last week and showed a different kind of skill: fighting for animal rights.

Swank, who says travel has been her best education, rarely leaves home without Kai, a devoted Jack Russell stray she rescued in Los Angeles.

In the Romanian capital Friday, she visited projects set up by the animal welfare foundation Vier Pfoten that encourage interaction between stray dogs and institutionalized people.

Bucharest has 35,000 strays, and their fate has sparked a fierce debate. Some believe they should be put down, others advocate putting the dogs in shelters, while others want strays to be sterilized.

Swank spoke to the Associated Press about her devotion to animals, her belief in sterilization and the ways street dogs can help disadvantaged people.

"I believe that is so healing to these kids who don't trust people anymore," she said. "The unconditional love of an animal is very healing and teaches them about not just unconditional love but about a relationship, about responsibility, about anger management."

Swank said she is starting a U.S. charity called Hilaroo to bring needy children and animals together. The charity combines her name and that of her late dog, Karoo.

"I've seen firsthand how it changes the path of the soul, for the animal and for the child," she said.

Visiting a retirement home, she talked about one special dog that changed the life of an elderly woman.

"There was a woman didn't get out of bed, and after a few weeks of the dog coming to visit, she's up walking," she said. "The dog literally got her out of bed."

Last week, the 37-year-old actress was in Paris for the Salvatore Ferragamo Cruise Collection 2013 show.

Next month, Swank begins work on "Martha and Mary," an HBO movie with Brenda Blethyn about two women trying to eradicate malaria. Directed by Phillip Noyce, it will be shot in North Carolina and South Africa.

Before leaving Bucharest, she urged people to neuter unwanted dogs and cats rather than kill them.

"I believe in a 'no kill' policy," she said. "Hopefully (we are) getting to a place where we have 'no kill' universally and just a more caring attitude in general to all animals."
