A forum with the title "Hongkongers had enough! Andy Lau, please come out to be the Chief Executive!" was established with netizens calling for the star to contest the top post.
Many artistes have also tweeted their intention to have Andy lead Hong Kong to new glories.
But some people have questioned Andy's integrity as he had been evasive about his marriage to his Malaysian wife Carol Choo for a long time.
Andy has remained silent so far, and is happily awaiting the arrival of his first child. Carol, a former beauty queen, is expected to deliver in June.
But the Cantopop Heavenly King had in 2003 said that he was not interested in the post.

The term of current Chief Executive of the Special Administrative Region Donald Tsang Yam-kuen will end on June 30.
