Namahage, folklore demons, dance at the Shinzan shrine in Oga city in Akita Prefecture, northern Japan. Oga city will pay about $2,500 a month to people willing to travel around the city dressed as devilish gods known as Namahage. Traditionally, local men wear the ghoulish costumes as they visit homes on a usually frostbitten New Year’s Eve. Photo: AFP
