Jay Chou Promotes New Film, “The Rooftop”

The Rooftop <天台>, the second movie directed by Jay Chou (周杰倫) will be released in theaters in Spring 2013.
Six years ago, Jay surprised the world with his directorial debut, Secret <不能說的秘密>, a simple yet beautiful love story that he also starred in and co-wrote. If the positive reception of the 42-second trailer is any indication,The Rooftop will be another well-received film from Jay.
The Rooftop was shot on location in Taiwan, Beijing, and Shanghai. The film depicts a fantasy retro world resembling the 1970s musical, combining romance, martial arts action, and special effects. Jay Chou gets to act, dance, and fight in the movie. The glam rock style setting, intertwined with the poetic and classical flavor, strongly exemplify Jay’s trademark musical style, Zhongguo Feng. In fact, mixing music, martial arts, and a retro style of sci-fi may signal the start of a new genre in film.
The production staff behind The Rooftop are said to be top notch. In addition to the team from Secret, Jay also recruited the team that was the five-time winner of the Golden Horse Best Cinematography award, master photographer Lee Pin Bing (李屏賓), arts designer, Yoshihito Akatsuka who worked on Kill Bill and The Flowers of War <金陵十三钗>, a special effects team from Korea, and the award winning costume designer,Dora Ng (吳裡璐).
As for the cast, apart from Jay Chou, the only one revealed thus far is Wang Xueqi (王學圻), who will appear in the upcoming Iron Man 3. The rest of the cast, including the leading actress, remains a secret. The marketing poster, released on the same day as the trailer, captures the mood of a completely opposite ambiance  It depicts two lovers staring at a starry sky, while the trailer features saturated colors and action packed sequences.
