Tony Leung and Zhou Xun in

Hong Kong's The Great Magician (大魔术师) led the movie charts during the week ahead of the Chinese New Year holidays.

Directed by Derek Yee (尔冬升), the action fantasy film stars Tony Leung (梁朝伟) and Sean Lau (刘青云), two top actors from Hong Kong, and a top actress from mainland, Zhou Xun (周迅).

"The set is elaborately designed to reflect the era in which the story of the film took place. Much of the budget has clearly been spent on creating the magic shows, therefore making them one of the highlights of the film. They should delight and intrigue audiences, even those who have seen a few live magic performances," according to the review on Twitch.

Here are the top 10 grossing films in China during the week from January 9 to 15:

1. The Great Magician with 73.1 million yuan ($ 11.6 million)

2. Mission Incredible: Adventures On The Dragon's Trail (喜羊羊与灰太狼之开心闯龙年) with 71.5 million yuan

3. You Are the Apple of My Eye (那些年, 我們一起追的女孩) with 35.1 million yuan

4. The Flowers of War (金陵十三钗) with 28.6 million yuan

5. Flying Swords of Dragon Gate (龙门飞甲) with 27.2 million yuan

6. The Monkey King 3D (大闹天宫3D) with 18.3 million yuan

7. Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows with 18.1 million yuan
